"The Eyries. The Crystal Mountains. La Rochers Tempête. The Snowmanes. In my travels I have come across at least a dozen names for that range of ice and rock. I've found that most ponies will recognize 'the Eyries' on a map, but the exact same ponies will generally tack on another name or two besides. This confusion likely results from the fragmenting of our language some two hundred years ago, or perhaps from the reign of Discord a century later. Either way, from one village to another, which often means a difference fewer than twenty miles, the name can change dramatically.
No two ponies can agree on what lies beyond those mountains. Official records in Germaneigh claim that an ancient civilization of crystal ponies once dwelled there, but any Equestrian shirepony will tell you that the frozen north is homeland to the griffons. Griffons! As if those featherbrains had any claim to our mountains. They are squatters pretending to be conquerors, nothing more. If they had any sense at all they'd go back across the ocean and never trifle with ponykind again. Equestria has struck up something of a partnership with them, but I daresay it's only one of convenience.
The ponies of Shetland, unsurprisingly, have the closest ties to these mountains. One might say the kingdom's history is bound tighter to those snow-capped peaks than to the Shadow Wood itself."
